Short Vort on the Parsha

In the Yom Kippur avodah, the kohen godol brings his own korban and
confesses his sins, and only afterwards does he bring the Bnei Yisroel's
korban and gain atonement for their sins. Why worry about himself before the
entire nation?

The Gemorah in Yoma explains that since he is gaining atonement on behalf of
everyone, he should be pure himself before he ensures everyone else will be
pure.

This is an important point in terms of chinuch; before helping others
ideally one should reach the requisite level of purity - then one will have
success. For example the Chasam Sofer said, if a teacher has bad middos then
what ends up happening is; the students do not learn what the teacher is
teaching but only learn the bad middos. This is similar to a thought said
over in the name of the Kotzker Rebbe - 'first I wanted to change the world,
when I realised I couldn't I would try to change my city. When I saw that
was also impossible I tried to change my family. Eventually I realised the
way to influence others is by changing myself'. This is clearly hinted to in
the order of the possuk - the kohen godol provided atonement for himself,
for his household and for the entire congregation (Vayikra 16:17).
