Short Vort on the Parsha

This week's parsha starts with "ViSamta Bateneh" - "You shall place the
Bikkurim in a basket"; the mitzvah of Bikkurim. Chazal tell us that the
wealthy people would bring their Bikkurim in golden baskets which the
Kohanim would return to them. As opposed to the poor who would bring it in
wicker baskets which the Kohanim kept. Why did the Kohanim return the
baskets to the wealthy who did not need their baskets, and keep the poor
man's basket? The Meforshim explain, this was in order not to shame the
poor. The wealthy gave expensive, beautiful fruit. Even without the golden
basket it looked impressive. Therefore, the Kohanim returned the baskets to
them. On the other hand, the poor gave low quality fruit. If it would have
been removed from the basket, the poor man would be embarrassed. Therefore,
the Kohanim kept their fruit and the baskets.

Short Vort on the Parsha

Rabeinu Bachayei brings an important principle and novel understanding of
the posuk (29:28) 'the hidden things are for Hashem, our G-d, and the
revealed things are for us and our children.' in the name of the Rambam. He
writes that all Mitzvos have reasons for them, but these reasons are beyond
our full comprehension. We might try to ascribe certain reasons for
individual Mitzvos, but they are ultimately beyond our comprehension - they
are reflections of Divine wisdom. Our main job is to perform the Mitzvos and
make sure to fulfil all their various Halochos, regardless of what the
reason for the mitzvah is. 'The hidden ones are for Hashem' - let Him worry
about the reasons for the Mitzvos, whilst 'the revealed ones are for us' -
we should just worry about the Halochos of the Mitzvos; the things that we
can be sure about.

Short Vort on the Parsha

When Lavan and Besuel heard the extraordinary sequence of events leading up
to the marriage proposal offered to Rivkah, they exclaimed, "This matter has
originated from Hashem!" Chazal state (Moed Kattan 18b) that it is clear
from the Torah, Neve'im and Kesuv'im that marriage of a man to his specific
wife, originates from Hashem. The above pasuk is one of the pesukim cited to
substantiate their statement. Rav Wolbe asks the obvious question. Doesn't
every aspect of our lives originate from Hashem? He answers that although it
certainly is true that everything comes from the Creator, however, in the
area of shidduchim, His providence is so overt that it is almost tangible.
We live in an era where Hashem's presence is hidden to a great degree. Yet,
He leaves open small windows through which we can perceive His guiding hand
most clearly. One such window is the area of shidduchim. Everyone has their
own personal miracle how their shidduch came about. If one takes the time to
appreciate this phenomenon, it will ultimately lead him to an awareness that
everything he encounters in life is in truth "a match made in Heaven."

Short Vort on the Parsha

The parsha ends with Yitzchak instructing Yaakov not to take a Canaanite
woman as a wife, but rather to take one of Lavan's daughters. Eisav
overheard the conversation and he too, refrained from marrying a Caaninite
woman, instead he married one of the daughters of Yishmael. The Ramban
comments that although he heeded his father's instructions not to marry a
Canaanite woman, he did not follow them as he should have since he did not
marry one of Lavan's daughters. Furthermore, he used his father's request of
Yaakov as an excuse to indulge his desires: he took yet another wife in
addition to his previous wives, while he should have taken her instead of
his wicked wives. Rav Wolbe explains that Eisav fulfilled the words of his
father's commandment, but he failed to fulfil the intent behind those words.
Yitzchak did not want his son to marry a Canaanite woman because he was
disgusted by them. That being the case, in Yitzchak's eyes, certainly the
daughter of Yishmael was not in the running as a prospective bride for his
sons. Yet, Eisav took the instructions and ran with them toward a lifestyle
of self-indulgence. A wise man gleans a lesson from everyone - even from the
wicked Eisav. One must take care when fulfilling the mitzvos of Hashem, not
to focus merely on performing the literal mitzvah while disregarding the
purpose behind the mitzvah. One such example is the mitzvah of Shabbos. One
can refrain from all the various prohibitions and yet spend the day doing
'absolutely nothing'. He thereby completely disregards the intent behind
these prohibitions: to spend the day in the pursuit of spirituality. The
level of one's spirituality depends to a great degree upon the amount of
"spirit" he includes in the performance of the mitzvos!
