Short Vort on the Parsha

Parashas Terumah begins with Hashem instructing Moshe to collect money for
the purpose of building a Mishkan: "Speak to Bnei Yisrael and let them take
for me a portion, from every man whose heart motivates him (asher yidvenu
libo) you shall take My portion" (Shemos 25:2). Rashi explains that the word
"yidvenu" connotes a "nedava" (a donation) and refers to the good will of
the person offering the donation. The Alter of Kelm writes that all the
donations to the Mishkan were given with completely pure intentions.
Donations were certainly not accepted if they were given as means of
attaining honour. Moreover, even donations given with the holy intentions of
obtaining Olam Haba or so that the Shechina should reside among Bnei
Yisroel, were not accepted. The money had to be given for the sole reason
that Hashem asked for Bnei Yisroel to donate. Doing something simply because
"that is what Hashem asked one to do" is the ultimate level of lishma. While
most of the time our actions are performed with some sort of ulterior motive
(even a holy one), with a bit of concentration it is quite possible to
perform an action simply for the sake of Hashem.

Short Vort on the Parsha

One of the clothes of the Kohen Godol mentioned in our Parsha is the me'il
(28:4). The Gemorah (Erchin 16a) tells us that the me'il atones for loshon
hora, for 'Hashem declared 'let the thing which emits noise (referring to
the me'il, which had bells on it) come and atone for an action of noise
(referring to the speech of loshon hora).'' The Chofetz Chaim explains this
via the fact that the me'il was the colour techeiles. As the Gemorah
(Menachos 43b) highlights, the colour techeiles is supposed to remind us of
the sea, which, in turn reflects the sky, which is similar to the colour of
the kisei hakovod ('Hashem's Throne'). Therefore, the Gemorah is telling us
that the colour of the me'il reminds us of the kisei hakovod, which will
make us close our mouths and not speak loshon hora, due to the Heavenly
judgment that we are wary of. Indeed, frighteningly, the Tanna DeBei Eliyohu
writes that loshon hora goes straight up to (be heard by) the kisei hakovod.
Moreover, the sound of the me'il is a positive sound - it is for the glory
of Hashem (like all the priestly garments), and this using of sound in a
positive fashion has the effect of atoning for the negative sounds made when
one speaks loshon hora.

Short Vort on the Parsha

After the sin of the Golden Calf, Bnei Yisroel were informed that instead of
Hashem accompanying them along their journey He would be sending an angel in
His place. "The people heard this bad tiding and they became grief stricken"
(Shemos 33:4). Rashi explains that the bad tiding refers to the fact that
Hashem would not be residing amongst them nor journeying along with them.
Rav Wolbe comments that this pasuk really defines the essence of good and
bad. "Good" is anything which brings a person closer to Hashem, while "bad"
is anything which distances a person from Him. Thus, the knowledge that
Hashem would not be traveling along with them was most certainly a bad
tiding. As the Ramchal writes, our mission in this world is to create the
strongest connection possible with our Creator. It makes sense that anything
which aids a person in accomplishing their mission is "good" while anything
that impedes him from achieving his goal is "bad." The formula for making
correct decisions is often very simple. We must ask ourselves: Is this
action going to bring me closer to Hashem or distance me from Him? It's a
small question that can yield tremendous dividends.

Short Vort on the Parsha

"The entire assembly of the children of Israel left Moses' presence" (Sh'mos
35:20). Why does the Torah use its precious words to tell us that the people
left Moshe? The Torah tells of many people interacting, but rarely mentions
when they walk away. Therefore, when it does, you can be sure it is for a
reason. The Alter of Kelm explains the reason in this instance. When a man
learns in yeshiva in the presence of his Rabbi, you can be certain he
behaves well; he's a model citizen indeed! But the true litmus test of a ben
Torah is how he behaves outside the beis medresh. By adding that "the
children of Israel" - not just stating "the entire assembly" - left from
before Moshe, the passuk is telling us that the people left with noticeable
change. It was visible that they were Bnei Yisroel, and not similar to the
other nations. Most secular Jews know that a religious person is supposed to
act differently. It seems that orthodox Jews make the news for relatively
small infractions. Why is it that religious Jews have been in the news for
rock throwing and spray painting? If other groups were mentioned every time
they did such things, then the newspapers would be dictionary thick! The
world looks at the religious Jew and expects him to act better. He must
always imagine himself as before his Rabbi and act consistently.

Short Vort on the Parsha

The Ramban (Vayikra 1:9) explains the concept of offering an animal as a
sacrifice to Hashem. A korban takes an animal - the object which epitomizes
the physical - and turns it into a spiritual entity. Thus, korbanos were the
greatest form of connecting with Hashem, since they were the bridge from our
physical world to the spiritual heavens. Rav Wolbe writes that although we
lack the Bais Hamikdosh and consequently the ability to bring korbanos, the
concept of a korban is still very relevant in the twenty-first century. We
are meant to take the physical and turn it into an expression of
spirituality. Bilam declared, "Who can count the [many mitzvos] that Yaakov
[performs] with dirt" (the dirt used in the ceremony of the Sotah, and the
ashes of the parah adumah etc.). Bnei Yisroel's uniqueness is their ability
to take plain dirt and connect it to the heavens. This is an idea we should
bear in mind as we prepare for the Yom Tov of Pesach. Much time is spent on
cleaning the house and other seemingly menial tasks. Yet, truthfully this is
yet another mitzvah that Bnei Yisroel perform with dirt (and crumbs).

Short Vort on the Parsha

The world gives the impression as if it operates by itself. Although a
nonbiased individual should be able to discern the Grand Puppeteer behind
the stage, it seems that most people are simply oblivious to the Creator. A
fascinating explanation of a mitzvah in this week's parsha offered by the
Sefer HaChinuch, illustrates to just what degree Hashem's presence in this
world is hidden. The Torah commands us, "A permanent fire shall be lit upon
the mizbeiach, it shall not be extinguished" (Vayikra 6:6). The Chinuch
writes that it is well known that even awesome miracles performed by Hashem
are somewhat concealed. They appear as if they are simply an element of
nature. Prior to the splitting of the sea, arguably the most astounding
miracle in all of history, "Hashem moved the sea with a strong east wind all
night" thereby giving the impression that the whole incident was the result
of a natural disaster. The force of a powerful tornado caused the waters to
split thereby allowing the Jews to pass through the parted waters. In a
similar vein, despite the fact that a fire descended from Heaven onto the
mizbeiach, we are commanded to light our own fire upon it to veil the
otherwise overt miracle. Indeed, even when Hashem's reveals Himself, He
makes sure to hide behind the veil of nature. When the Navi exhorts us,
"Walk with tzenius with Hashem" (Michah 6:8), he is not merely instructing
those who look for publicity to conceal their good deeds. He is informing us
that when one conceals his actions he is actually following in Hashem's
ways, since He also hides what He does.

Short Vort on the Parsha

At the end of this week's Parsha the Torah tells us about the mitzva of
Eglah Arufa. When a murder takes place between two cities, the elders of the
closer city come to the murder site and perform the mitzva of Eglah Arufa.
They say "Yadeinu Lo Shafchu Es HaDam", our hands did not spill this blood.

The Gemara in Sotah explains that of course we are not accusing the elders
and righteous members of the city of murder, but if they let someone leave
the city without food and proper escort they are responsible for the murder.
Why?

The Gilyon Pninim brings from the Alter of Kelm that when a person is
dejected he has less value for his life.

This man who was not treated properly upon departure was less enthusiastic
about life and quite possibly did not struggle with his murderer to save
himself. Therefore his blood is on the hands of those who neglected him.

In a radical twist he brings from Rav Yaakov Neiman zt"l in Darkei Mussar
the following important lesson on chinuch.

Rav Neiman says that it is not the victim that they are saying they did not
let leave without food and escort, but rather the murderer. This person may
have needed some attention. Only when he was treated like a non-entity was
he able to stand up in such an audacious manner and callously snuff out the
life of another human being.

The Elders are called to declare that they treated every human with respect
and no murderer was created by their lack of caring for anyone.

Often when a child acts up, it is a cry for attention. One reaction is to
scream to stop the terrible behaviour. A more effective response is to deal
with the underlying cause. Our parsha is teaching us what tragic results can
result if we don't pay attention to the needs of those around us.

Short Vort on the Parsha

The Torah commands us in the mitzvah called 'Shiluach Haken' that we must
send away the mother bird before taking away its eggs. There is a
fundamental machlokes between the Ramban and the Rambam in regards to this
mitzva. What is the reason for sending away the mother bird? The Rambam says
it's so we don't harm the mother bird - we are avoiding the pain the bird
would go through if she were to see her eggs being taken. The Ramban,
however disagrees and says that the reason is not out of care directly for
the mother bird, but rather so we improve our personal middos via acting
with care for others' feelings. The Maharal explains that this machlokes
Rambam and Ramban is a fundamental one about the following point in
hashkafa: Is the world for me or am I for the world? The Rambam holds that
'I am for the world,' ie. my role in life is to perfect the world [that does
not need to mean going out and physically fixing things; we know that the
performance of each mitzvah properly fixes a different part of the world.]
The Ramban however, disagrees, and holds that 'the world is here for me,'
ie. the world is a vehicle for me to fix up my middos and character. And
that's why the Rambam focuses on the bird's pain, whilst the Ramban stresses
the middos effect.

In reality, both outlooks are true, and are indeed not as different as one
might assume.

Short Vort on the Parsha

This week's parsha starts with "ViSamta Bateneh" - "You shall place the
Bikkurim in a basket"; the mitzvah of Bikkurim. Chazal tell us that the
wealthy people would bring their Bikkurim in golden baskets which the
Kohanim would return to them. As opposed to the poor who would bring it in
wicker baskets which the Kohanim kept. Why did the Kohanim return the
baskets to the wealthy who did not need their baskets, and keep the poor
man's basket? The Meforshim explain, this was in order not to shame the
poor. The wealthy gave expensive, beautiful fruit. Even without the golden
basket it looked impressive. Therefore, the Kohanim returned the baskets to
them. On the other hand, the poor gave low quality fruit. If it would have
been removed from the basket, the poor man would be embarrassed. Therefore,
the Kohanim kept their fruit and the baskets.

Short Vort on the Parsha

You are standing today - all of you - before Hashem your God (29:9)

In this pasuk, Moshe is telling the Jewish People that they are standing
before Hashem, about to enter into His covenant and accept upon themselves
all of the mitzvos of the Torah.

Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman asks, 'In truth, every one of us is constantly
standing before Hashem; if so, what is the great significance that Moshe had
to inform the Jewish People that they were specifically standing before
Hashem at this point in time?'

Perhaps one could answer as follows: While it is certainly true that we are
constantly standing before Hashem and He is constantly noting our deeds,
there are times when we are in effect, closer to Hashem in a very real way.
If we imagine a land where the king governs all of his subjects, we can say
that they are all under the watchful eye of the king - they are all 'before
him.' Each citizen is looked after by the king, and to a degree, enjoys a
relationship with him, but their relationship is limited. However, a subject
who approaches the king and offers to live in his palace and dedicate his
entire life to the king, serving him in every way 24 hours a day, is going
to enjoy a much closer relationship with the king. He is going to be better
looked after and as a resident of the palace, all of his needs are going to
be taken care of.

Perhaps this is why Moshe informed the Jewish People that they were standing
before Hashem. He was telling them that because they were about to enter
into a covenant with Hashem to observe His Torah at all times, they were no
longer merely subjects of the King, they were now loyal servants agreeing to
live in the King's Palace - as such they were about to be 'before Hashem' in
a way that they had never previously experienced.
