Korach had many outstanding qualities. He hailed from a distinguished
family, was a talmid chacham, possessed extraordinary wealth, and was a very
wise man. How then could he have fallen so low to accuse Moshe of selfishly
taking power and prestige for himself, especially after the Torah testifies
about Moshe, “Now the man Moshe was exceedingly humble, more than any person
on the face of the earth.”? How could he possibly accuse him of possessing
the contemptible trait of arrogance?! There are two types of people; there
are givers - people who are constantly looking for opportunities to where
they can give and assist others. Then there are takers - people who are
continuously looking how to further add to their possessions, how to satisfy
their own needs and how to obtain more honour. The latter are never
satisfied; they always desire more. The Parsha, right at the beginning
informs us what the root of Korach's downfall was: Vayikach Korach- Korach
was a taker; he wanted more honour for himself. He was already a Levi but
that wasn't enough, he wanted more. He wanted to have a prominent communal
position and was jealous of the honour that Moshe and Aharon were getting.
He knew no bounds and did whatever he could to obtain that honour, even if
it meant starting a rebellion against Moshe. When one is self-centred, and
has a specific desire, his intellect gets corrupted, and he can't think
rationally. He gets blinded by the desire and will do anything to attain it.
All Korach was able to focus on was achieving a rank of special importance,
which caused him to lower himself and do everything he could to achieve his
goal. The Gemorah refers to the mosquito as a “puny creature”. The Gemorah
explains, that it is called a “puny creature” since it has an opening
through which food is ingested, but it does not have an outlet through which
waste is excreted. Chazal are relating to us; someone who only takes in and
doesn't give out is called a tiny creature. people!

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

The Torah says that the mountain that Aharon dies upon was called 'Hor
Hahor' which Chazal tell us means that there was one mountain on top of
another mountain. What is the significance of this? Chazal tell us that
Hashem flattened all the mountains in the dessert as Bnei Yisrael passed so
we would have an easy walk. There are 3 mountains that were left alone
though; Har Sinai, Hor Hahor, and Har Nevo (where Moshe dies). The idea is
that these correspond to 3 crowns. The Mishna in Avos (4:17) cites that
Rabbi Shimon says that there are 3 crowns - the crown of Torah, the crown of
Kehuna, and the crown of Malchus (kingship), and the crown of a good name
rests upon all of them ('olah al gabeihen') . Har Sinai matches the crown of
Torah for obvious reasons, Har Nevo is the crown of Malchus - for this is
where Moshe dies - and he had the halachic status of a melech (Rambam beis
habechira 6;11). Now 'Hor Hohar' corresponds to the crown of Kehunah (Aharon
was Kohen Gadol), and has a double-mountain, for Aharon also had the 'shem
tov' which rises above all the other crowns, for he went out of his way to
make peace between members of Bnei Yisrael.

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

In this week's Parsha Pinchos got up and decided on his own to defend the
honour of Hashem and kill Zimri. He acted in accordance with the halacha of
"Kana'im Pog'im Bo". Had he asked Beis Din for permission, he would not have
been told to kill him. A Kana'i (zealot) cannot get permission from Beis
Din. He must act on his own. This halacha is quite unique and contrary to
general Torah Hashkofa. Why is this so?

Rav Moshe Feinstein in Darash Moshe explains; while it is important to do
mitzvos with pure intentions, nevertheless a mitzva done with ulterior
motives and for the sake of personal benefits is still worth doing. However
when it comes to punishing others, this can only be done if carried out with
100% pure intentions and totally L'Shem Shamayim. Judging a person's
intentions are not within the abilities of another human. Only Hashem can
know a person's thoughts. Therefore in the case of Kana'im Pogim Bo, Beis
Din can never render an opinion if a particular person can carry out "Nikmas
Hashem". This is between the person and Hashem alone. This was the gripe of
the Shevatim against Pinchos. They doubted his sincerity until Hashem
testified on Pinchos's behalf and awarded him the Kehuna and a Bris of
Sholom.

In this week's Parsha the Bnei Yisroel are told to take vengeance against
the people of Midyan. When the war with Midyan was over and Moshe found out
that they did not kill the women he became angry with Elozar because the
women were the ones who caused Klal Yisroel to sin.

The Gemorah Pesochim (66b) says that when a person becomes angry even if he
is as wise as Moshe, his wisdom will leave him. Afterwards Elozar taught
Bnei Yisroel Hilchos Tevilah since it was hidden from Moshe due to his
anger.

Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz points out that Moshe was perfectly correct in his
assessment of the army's poor judgment and had every right to be angry. So
why was he punished? He answers that Moshe was not punished. When anger
overtakes a person the fact is that his wisdom leaves him. It is not a
punishment it is the way things work. Therefore, it makes absolutely no
difference if the anger is justified or not. Anger and wisdom just don't go
together.

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

In his sefer 'pirkei machshava,' Rabbi Tauber writes extensively about the
role of tragedy. Chazal relate that when the Romans were killing the great
holy 10 martyrs, the angels shouted at Hashem 'is this what the reward for
[their study of] Torah is!' and Hashem responded that 'if the angels are
quiet, fine, but if they continue then I will destroy the world.' It seems
Hashem had no response; were the angels right? Rav Pinkus explains that
Hashem was saying here that the world deserves destruction, and the way to
save it is to have a time of tragedy which will serve as a means for the
Jews to cry tears to Hashem in each generation for these holy martyrs. Thus,
Hashem was telling the angels that 'if you continue with your claims and
want to get your way and stop these murders, then the world will end up
being destroyed; only if you are silent and let this go then it is through
this tragedy that future generations will cry out to Me and allow the world
to continue.' This is THE idea of tragedy/sadness; it is so that a Jew who
seems like he is completely in the dark and despite that cries out and
forges a connection with Hashem - to hang on and show commitment; this is
only an opportunity in tragedy and tests. 'V'emunascha baleilos' - true
Emunah is forged when one can hold on to Hashem in the dark. This is why
Tisha B'Av is called a 'mo'ed,' a name normally reserved for festivals,
because mo'ed means 'meeting' - and on Tisha B'Av we do meet with Hashem
even in our time of darkness and tragedy; this is the greatest expression of
our commitment to Him.

Chazal tell us that a person must say, "When will my actions be similar to
the actions of my forefathers, Avraham, YItzchok and Yaakov." The source for
this obligation, writes Rav Wolbe, can be found in this week's Parsha. In
the first paragraph of Shema Hashem commands us, "You shall love Hashem with
all your heart, with all your soul and with all your resources" (Devarim
6:5). The Medrash cites Rebbi Meir's explanation: "You shall love Hashem
with all your heart like Avraham, with all your soul like Yitzchok and with
all your resources like Yaakov." Focusing on the greatness of our
forefathers and striving to emulate their love for Hashem, forces every Jew
to acknowledge the innate greatness that can be found in each and every
individual who is part of our exalted Nation. This idea is extremely
important for anyone engaged in bettering themself. Before one begins
working on rectifying ones negative character traits, it is imperative that
he or she is cognizant of and familiar with their positive character traits.
Otherwise, as one learns through a mussar sefer, one will end up
concentrating solely on the negative aspects of one's own personality. Such
behaviour is a certain way to bring about depression or to cause the person
to give up the possibility of curing his spiritual maladies. The Ramchal
writes in Derech Eitz Chaim, that merely thinking about the awesome
spiritual levels attainable, aids a person in his journey toward perfection.

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

The opening of the parsha brings a rare word to the fore; Ekev, as in the
possuk 'If you shall listen to these commandments." Rashi points out that
the word ekev is from the root 'heel' and therefore the possuk is referring
to when one does the smallest of the mitzvos that one might ordinarily stamp
down with their feet. The Torah then goes on to describe the
rewards/blessings that will be given to us if we keep these mitzvos.

Why is there such great reward given for keeping the smallest mitzvos that
the Torah should dedicate an entire section to it? Some answer that Rashi
does not mean solely these small mitzvos, but rather he means that if one
even keeps the small mitzvos, ie. and certainly keeps the other and more
important ones. Thus, this section is another of those enumerating blessings
given when we perform the entire body of mitzvos correctly. However, perhaps
Rashi does actually mean to refer to specifically the small mitzvos (the
Ramban does seem to understand Rashi this way). If so, perhaps we should try
to understand the value and importance of the smallest/'unimportant'
mitzvos.  The value of a single mitzvah is beyond our full comprehension; a
mitzvah corrects part of the world. In fact Rav Dessler explains the phrase
in the gemorah 'there is no reward for a mitzvah in this world' to mean that
all the pleasures of this world that have ever been and will ever be
experienced by the total quantity of people in this world will still not be
enough to bestow the full reward for one mitzvah. As the mishna says (Avos
1;2) 'we do not know the reward giving for mitzvos and how each one is
weighed.' This is because we live in a world of action as opposed to
thought. So, when we think of a 'small mitzvah,' we think of a mitzvah which
involves little action; smiling for example. But mitzvos are not only
measured via action; there are other criteria too - for example how
selfless/pure one's motivations are in doing the mitzvah (lishma), and how

Rashi points out that the word ekev is from the root 'heel' and therefore the possuk is referring to when one does the smallest of the mitzvos that one might ordinarily stamp down with their feet. The Torah then goes on to describe the rewards/blessings that will be given to us if we keep these mitzvos. Why is there such great reward given for keeping the smallest mitzvos that the Torah should dedicate an entire section to it? Some answer that Rashi does not mean solely these small mitzvos, but rather he means that if one even keeps the small mitzvos, ie. and certainly keeps the other and more important ones. Thus, this section is another of those enumerating blessings given when we perform the entire body of mitzvos correctly. However, perhaps Rashi does actually mean to refer to specifically the small mitzvos (the Ramban does seem to understand Rashi this way). If so, perhaps we should try to understand the value and importance of the smallest/'unimportant' mitzvos. The value of a single mitzvah is beyond our full comprehension; a mitzvah corrects part of the world. In fact Rav Dessler explains the phrase in the gemorah 'there is no reward for a mitzvah in this world' to mean that all the pleasures of this world that have ever been and will ever be experienced by the total quantity of people in this world will still not be enough to bestow the full reward for one mitzvah. As the mishna says (Avos 1;2) 'we do not know the reward giving for mitzvos and how each one is weighed.' This is because we live in a world of action as opposed to thought. So, when we think of a 'small mitzvah,' we think of a mitzvah which involves little action; smiling for example. But mitzvos are not only measured via action; there are other criteria too - for example how selfless/pure one's motivations are in doing the mitzvah (lishma), and how much the mitzvah is done b'simcha , b'ahava, and how much exertion one goes through in order to do the mitzvah (Avos 5;26), etc.

Mrs Sarit Lebovits will be giving a ladies shiur this Shabbos Morning

All ladies and girls welcome

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

The opening three pesukim of the parsha tell us that if we listen to Hashem
we will get brocha, but if we ignore Hashem's word then we will get klala
(curse). However the Torah does not then go on to tell us what these
blessings and curses are. Why not?

Rav Moshe Feinstein answers beautifully that the answer is embedded within
the simple reading of the pesukim themselves.

The posuk says 'the brocha that you listen to Hashem's mitzvos.and the curse
if you do not listen to Hashem's mitzvos.' The brocha is the mitzvos
themselves, and the curse is failing to keep the mitzvos.

As the Ohr Hachaim (and Messilas Yesharim) spells out, if one keeps the
mitzvos and their spirit properly then there is no greater feeling of
happiness, achievement, and fulfilment. And the converse is true too,
there's nothing more conducive to a life of drabness, emptiness, and lack of
fulfilment than a life bereft of mitzvos.

Similarly, as Rashi writes (Bamidbar 18:7), the greatest gift is the ability
and privilege to serve Hashem - that is the only thing which uplifts us as
people.

Short Vort for the Shabbos table

Tazria deal with the halachos of tzora'as which comes as a punishment for
one who speaks lashon hara. Rav Wolbe quotes Rav Yisrael Salanter who said
that it is worthwhile for someone to learn mussar for an entire lifetime if
it will prevent him from speaking lashon hara even one single time! In
addition to emphasizing the severity of lashon hara, this assertion
enlightens us to the patience one must have with himself while trying to
advance in avodas Hashem. The problem is that many people simply do not have
patience. They want to see the improvement in their avodah, and thus they
have an urge to perform grand actions whereby it is possible to gauge their
advancement immediately. However, the way to advance in avodas Hashem along
the road toward perfection is specifically by means of small, seemingly
insignificant, actions. One who tries to climb the ladder two rungs at a
time will fall through the rungs and end up back in the very place that he
started. While small actions seem trivial, the Chovos Halevovos (Shaar
Cheshbon HaNefesh chap. 5) explains by way of analogy just how tremendous
every positive action is. When it appears on earth that the sun moved a
foot, in reality it traversed thousands of miles in the sky. In a similar
vein, saying a single good word seems like a negligible advancement here on
earth, but in reality to Hashem in the heavens the achiever has traversed
thousands of spiritual miles. A smile, a nod, a pat on the back or a good
word are all veritable spiritual goldmines. Start small and you will end up
big!
