Short Vort on the Parsha

Pharaoh dreamt two dreams and although he related them to the wisest men in
Egypt, he failed to receive a satisfying interpretation. Subsequently, the
Sar HaMashkim informed him that two years earlier Yosef had correctly
interpreted two dreams, and Pharaoh immediately had Yosef brought to the
palace. When Yosef arrived Pharaoh said, "I heard it said about you that you
can hear a dream to interpret it" (Bereishis 41, 15). Rashi explains "you
can hear a dream" to mean that you listen and understand a dream, thus
enabling you to interpret it." Rav Wolbe comments that we can glean an
important lesson from this Rashi. Many people respond without understanding

  • and often without even listening - to what was said to them! They are so
quick to dispense their wisdom, to the point that they have already
formulated a response before their friend even finished his question or
comment. Rashi is informing us that a proper reply can only be given after a
person listens and understands what the person in front of him is trying to
    say.
